Teen Breast Reduction
Teen breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that is performed in order to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. Teen breast reduction can be performed on young women as early as fifteen years old. Teen breast reduction is best performed on breasts that have finished developing, as continued development may compromise surgical results. Teen breast reduction is performed on patients who suffer from medical or emotional problems associated with large breasts.
Reasons for Teen Breast Reduction
Teen breast reduction can be extremely beneficial to patients whose activity is restricted by troublesome breasts. Some teen girls are unable to participate in sports activities due to the size of their breasts or may be self-conscious when completing such activities. Teen breast reduction surgery candidates may also suffer physical problems associated with breast size including:
- shoulder, neck, and back pain
- skin irritations
- breathing problems
- skeletal deformities
Special Concerns for Teens
Teen breast reduction surgery carries special concerns due to the age of a patient. Continued physical development is a concern that should be addressed on an individual basis to determine whether a patient is a good candidate for teen breast reduction surgery. Traditional breast reduction techniques involve repositioning of the nipple. This part of the technique carries the risk that a patient may not be able to breast feed in the future. This may be a special concern for teen breast reduction surgery candidates.
Know What to Expect
It is important for a teen breast surgery candidate to have a good understanding of what to expect before, during, and after surgery. Parents, surgeons, and patients together should ensure that a teen is emotionally and physically prepared for teen breast reduction surgery. As with all surgical procedures, teen breast reduction surgery carries both risks and benefits that a patient and her guardians should understand before the procedure.
Procedure
Teen breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed under a general anesthesia. In the traditional procedure, an anchor-shaped incision is made in the breast fold up the lower portion of the breast and around the nipple. Some degree of scarring is an inevitable outcome of this procedure. Once the incision is made, excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue is removed, the nipple is repositioned, and the incisions are closed.
Some patients may be good candidates for scarless teen breast reduction surgery that involves a much less extensive incision. This technique involves using liposuction to extract excess fat from the breasts and leaves the nipple intact. This can be a very desirable technique for teen breast reduction patients. Following any teen breast reduction surgery, the patient may experience discomfort, bruising, and swelling that usually subsides after a few weeks. Teen breast reduction surgery produces highly desirable dramatic results that often leave a patient physically and emotionally uplifted.
