Risks of Breast Augmentation

Although breast augmentations have been suspected of causing numerous systemic illnesses, the majority of these unfounded claims have been proven wrong. As a result, breast augmentation surgeries are on the rise. Women should be aware, however, that there are potential risks associated with breast augmentations, as are present with any other surgery.

While no surgeon can guarantee a risk-free procedure, choosing an experienced, qualified, and board-certified breast surgeon can reduce many risks of breast augmentation. Breast implants are medical devices and, like all medical devices, they have certain benefits but can also pose certain health risks. When considering breast implant surgery it's important to understand the possibility and the degree of risks associated with breast augmentation before you make a decision. While determining risks of breast augmentation during your decision to choose breast implant surgery, consult with your doctor. Click Here to contact a board certified plastic surgeon in your area.

Make An Informed Decision

By researching risks of breast augmentation before deciding on surgery, you can make more informed decision. Whether implant surgery is for the purpose of reconstruction or augmentation, breast implants are not considered to be lifetime devices. Chances are you will likely need additional surgeries and periodic visits to your surgeon in the future. Your implants will eventually have to be removed at which point you will have to decide whether or not to replace them.

Breast Augmentation Risks

Some women with breast implants can experience some kind of trouble after the procedure. Before you decide to go forward with breast implant surgery, you should consider the risks of breast augmentation. These risks include:

Choosing a qualified surgeon can reduce these risks and help avoid any complications. Contact us to speak with a board certified plastic surgeon who can help you acheive your desired results.

Implant Deflation

Changes to the shape of the breast after implantation can occur and are irreversible. When saline-filled breast implants deflate, the saline solution leaks either through an unsealed or damaged valve or through a break in the implant shell. Implant deflation can occur immediately or progressively over a period of time and is noticed by loss of size or shape of the implant. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with equipment specifically designed for imaging the breast may be used for evaluating patients with suspected rupture or leakage of their silicone gel-filled implant. Removal of the implants may leave undesirable dimpling, puckering, wrinkling, or other cosmetic changes to the breast shape and appearance.

Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation

If you are considering having children, another of the risks of breast augmentation is that breast implants may affect your ability to produce milk for breastfeeding. It is also possible to lose sensation or experience changed sensation, even increased, in your breasts or nipples. Most of the studies concern mastectomy or reconstruction patients where levels of trauma to the breast tissue are quite high.

Breast Cancer and Breast Augmentation

While no direct cause and effect link has been identified between breast cancer and risks of breast augmentation, the placement of a breast implant may cause increased difficulty with taking and reading a mammogram. This should also be considered with other risks of breast augmentation when making the decision to have surgery. When you request a routine mammogram, be sure to go to a radiology center where technicians are experienced in the special techniques required to get a reliable x-ray of a breast with an implant. It is also advisable to have a baseline mammogram taken prior to breast augmentation surgery.
