Male Abdominoplasty

Male abdominoplasty is a common cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that is performed to enhance the appearance of the abdominal region by reducing the size of a protruding stomach. Male abdominoplasty is performed by removing the excess skin and fat of the midsection. The average cost of male abdominoplasty is between six and ten thousand dollars depending on a number of factors. Male abdominoplasty can involve a full "tummy tuck"? or a partial "tummy tuck."? In a partial or mini male abdominoplasty procedure, the skin and fat of the lower abdominal region is enhanced, which leaves the belly button intact and leaves a patient with a smaller scar than the full male abdominoplasty.

The ideal candidate for male abdominoplasty is a person who is close to their ideal body weight, but whose abdominal region does not respond well to diet and exercise. Patients who have excess skin or fat in the abdominal area can benefit from male abdominoplasty. It is important for a male abdominoplasty patient to have a good understanding of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. As with all surgical procedures, there are risks and benefits to major male abdominoplasty. A prospective male abdominoplasty patient should discuss their full medical history, all current medications and supplements, and any other concerns with their cosmetic surgeon prior to male abdominoplasty surgery.

Full male abdominoplasty takes approximately two to five hours and the partial procedure takes one or two hours to complete. Male abdominoplasty surgery is usually an outpatient procedure that can be performed under a general or local anesthetic plus sedation. Full male abdominoplasty surgery is performed by making an incision in the lower abdomen from hip to hip and a second incision to reposition the belly button. The abdominal muscles are tightened, excess skin and fat is removed, and the skin is stretched to create a firmer smoother appearance. Sometimes a surgeon will employ liposuction techniques to remove excess fat from the area. In a mini- male abdominoplasty, a much smaller incision is made in the lower stomach region, and the skin and fat of the lower abdomen are enhanced in the same way described above, except that the navel is not repositioned in a mini- male abdominoplasty procedure.

As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks and complications that can occur with male abdominoplasty surgery. Bruising and swelling are common in the first few weeks to a month. Patients should limit physical activity in the first few months following surgery, as recommended by their surgeon. Infection and bleeding are rare side effects from male abdominoplasty. The scar from male abdominoplasty can be extensive and actually get worse before it gets better. A male abdominoplasty scar is generally positioned so that it will be hidden under clothing. Following all after care instructions is crucial to proper healing and the mitigation of potential risks.
