Breast Implants Surgery
Breast implant surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. In 2003 approximately 250,000 women underwent breast implant surgery for augmentation purposes and another 74,000 had the procedure for reconstructive purposes. Both types of breast implant surgery are done for cosmetic purposes but the difference is that augmentation is done purely for aesthetic purposes and reconstructive breast implant surgery is done on a woman who has had a mastectomy (breast removal) surgery to remove cancerous breast tissue.
Breast implant surgery has been performed in the United States since the 1960s. The average cost of breast implant surgery ranges between three and nine thousand dollars not including additional costs for related fees. When considering the cost of breast implant surgery it is important to keep in mind that the results of breast implant surgery are never permanent; the average implant will last seven to ten years. After five years 24 percent of augmentation breast implants will require re-operation and 45 percent of reconstructive breast implants will require the same.
Preparing for Breast Implant Surgery
Breast implant surgery procedures can vary extensively based on the type and extent of surgery that is most appropriate for a particular individual. When a woman first consults a plastic surgeon with interest in breast implant surgery, s/he will discuss a number of things that will determine whether or not she is a good candidate for breast implant surgery. Her reasons for seeking surgery, her expectations, medical history, and current lifestyle (including use of medications, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.) will all be important determining factors. Prior to breast implant surgery a patient should have a clear idea as to the costs, risks, and benefits associated with breast implant surgery, as well as what to expect during and after the surgery.
Types of Breast Implants
There are two types of breast implants that are most commonly used: silicone and saline implants. Breast implants can vary in shell surface, shape, profile, volume and thickness. Some implants are made with a fixed volume, some are filled during breast implant surgery, and others allow for filler volume adjustment after breast implant surgery.
Incision
There are also four methods of breast implant surgery in terms of incision sites: transaxillary which is an incision in the armpit area; periareolar with an incision made around the areola; inframammary where and incision is made in the breast fold; and transumbilical where an incision is made in the belly button. Breast implants can also be placed under the muscle or under the glandular tissue. Each of these types of breast implant surgery has their own risks and benefits, so it is important to speak to a qualified surgeon to discover which would be best for you.
Recovery
During the first month or so after a breast implant surgery procedure many women will experience pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and nausea. A plastic surgeon will advise their patients of what to expect and how to care for themselves after breast implant surgery. After the recovery period many women enjoy their new look and the other benefits of breast implant surgery.
