Silicone Breast Implant Dangers
Dangers of silicone breast implants include capsular contraction, infection, excessive bleeding and changes in nipple/breast sensitivity. Although frightening, almost all dangers of silicone breast implants can be avoided through changes in the design of the implant.
Due to the dangers of silicone breast implants, the FDA issued a moratorium on all silicone breast implants in the early 90's. Despite dangers of silicone breast implants, patients may receive them on a voluntary basis if they certain criteria; averting the dangers of silicone breast implants through design requires individuals to test the new models. Frequent examinations look for any evidence of dangers of silicone breast implants: checking for leaks or hardening implant shells. Evidence supplied by various groups regarding dangers of silicone breast implants has been contradictory in the past, due partly to the nature of the research into the dangers of silicone breast implants; initially, companies were not required by the FDA to present any research detailing the possible dangers of silicone breast implants prior to marketing their product. Only after a series of lawsuits alleging the health dangers of silicone breast implants did investigation into the possible side effects begin in earnest. Currently, until there is evidence the dangers of silicone breast implants are minimal and can be avoided, the moratorium will remain in place.
Information about the dangers of silicone breast implants should be available from any plastic surgeon who performs breast augmentation, and patients should discuss the dangers of silicone breast implants (if they fall into an eligible category) prior to deciding to proceed with surgery.
